Johnston County, North Carolina has been one of the state’s fastest-growing counties in recent years, with a population increase of 36% over the last decade. As of March 2024, it was the third fastest growing county in the state, with a population growth rate of 3.0% since 2022.
Some factors that contribute to Johnston County’s growth include:
Highway expansion
In 2024, the southern loop of the I-540 belt line opened, and I-40 was widened from four to eight lanes. Other improvements include transitioning Highway 70 to I-42.
Diverse economy
The county has pharmaceutical operations, commercial development, and a strong agriculture presence. It’s also home to local employers like UNC Health, Grifols, and Caterpillar.
Education programs
The county offers multiple education programs.
Some say that Johnston County is more affordable than Wake County, and that families from Raleigh and other areas are moving there for more space.
